The Value of a Non-Profit Intermediary

I worked for three years at an intermediary organization called Honoring Emancipated Youth (HEY). HEY was started by the United Way of the Bay Area in 1999, when community advocates began to recognize the needs of a very specific group of young people – those aging out of foster care. When I started I had no idea what an intermediary was, only that I was responsible for capacity building of non-profits. I quickly learned that HEY was not only a pioneer in their advocacy for this older foster youth, they were one of the true pioneers of the intermediary concept.
